OFFF Festival – Day 3

The third and final day came really quickly and had the promise of the main titles, an OFFF Festival highlight every year. This year’s main titles were created by the incredibly talented folks over at Onesize and the awesome James White aka Signalnoise (more on them later in the post).

The first talk we went to was by the insanely skilled and talented studio Laika. They are an animation studio that produces stop frame animation features and shorts. They pride themselves on using the mixture of traditional stop motion animation techniques and also using digital, 3D compositing to produce spellbinding films. The team at Laika have created several feature films including, The Boxtrolls, Nominated for an Oscar® and a BAFTA for Best Animated Feature Film – ParaNorman and Coraline.

Laika treated the OFFF audience to some incredible behind the scenes videos of some of their feature films and all we can say is that the audience were stunned! It really makes you think about the passion and love of one’s craft when it can take up to 2 weeks to produce only 3 seconds of animation! It’s incredible the amount of determination the animators have on projects like these.

Gavin Strange aka JamFactory

Next up we saw the highly infectious and super exciting, enthusiastic and charismatic Gavin Strange (JamFactory) a lead designer at the Four Times Oscar Winning Studio, Aardman, the guys behind Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Creature Comforts, Chicken Run and many more animated films.

He took to the stage a blew the audience away and went on to discuss how being in the creative industry one’s job should be fun. That creatives should embrace challenges and seek creative satisfaction where they can. He also covered how designers should embrace the “I don’t know where this is going moments, but I’m learning” or as he defined it – Autodidacticism, the act of self-directed learning about a subject or subjects in which one has had little to no formal education. You could tell from Gavin’s talk that he is incredibly passionate about his work and also his sideline projects most certainly feed directly into his professional life.

Onesize & James White aka SignalNoise – Main titles

The main titles were on next and the crowd braced themselves for the highlight of OFFF festival! This year saw Onesize and SignalNoise team up to produce something different from the previous OFFF festivals.

As James White (SignalNoise) is primarily a print designer he was teamed up with Onesize, a Dutch film and TV production company, to produce not only a video version of the main titles but also an awesome take home gift for the entire audience. This years main titles came in the form of a deck of playing cards… However these cards and titles came along with a slightly dark storyline… In order not to spoil it for you we have included the videos below. Watch the 1980s style promo video first then the main titles… All will be revealed.

Unfortunately we were not able to stick around for the headline act SNASK however we heard that they presented a fantastic take which included a live band!

Well that’s it for this years OFFF Festival… We loved it and suggest that you try and make it to next year’s festival. We have already grabbed ourselves the Mega Early Bird tickets for next year and if you are thinking of going why not grab them before they sell out over at the OFFF16 website.
